NATES CERAMICS PORTFOLIO
Unit 4 Projects
This is a project is one that I've been thinking about for a long time. A tea pot was the final for ceramics 2 from when I was in eighth grade through last year and so I thought I should give it a shot. This project fits well in the lidded box assignments place because I did create and spend a good amount of time making sure that my lid would work well. you can see my panning in the top right drawing and in the photo next to it where I used an app to daw on the greenware that just came off the wheel. that defiantly helped me get a clear vision of what I wanted to do with this piece. the spout took three attempts and the handle obviously isn't there yet because the project isn't done yet but once I find a good glaze for it, the handle will be next. I am pretty happy with it so far other than the size. In my opinion it is too small and if I were to do it again it would be larger.
As a project that started as me seeing if I could even construct an ear, it is now one of my all time favorite pieces. It fits in the sculpture assignment because the ear captures all the attention and only has the vase there to hold it up in the air. In the top right, there's a photo of what the ear started as. It was way too big for the piece I intended to put it on as apart of the face because I wanted to give myself enough room to get my fingers all around it. It was sprayed down and wrapped up after I set about an hour and a half on it because I wanted to save it for a thrown vase. I didn't end up using it for two months and then I finally decided to make a piece for it to hang on. I slab built a cylinder and then then added a flat top before putting in on the wheel and making it more smooth. Adding the ear was a mess and I almost ruined it because I only made half of the ear on the slab; just the front and not the back. This project took me over 5 class periods from building the ear and vase, attaching the ear and smoothening everything out. It isn't glazed yet because I haven't chosen a glaze yet , but I do love this piece and it's a personal favorite because of how far out of my comfert zone I was when I started it.
This piece has grown on me like crazy. It all started when I saw Shelby making his handles for his mugs way too sharp and square, in my opinion, and so I told him about a technique that I saw some potters online use. He told me it wouldn't work so I decided to throw a little mug and give the method a shot myself. I think that the shape came out great for the first mug I've made so I'm not too worried about the glaze. I'll try something new with the glaze combo because it tis B-mix. I'll add the photo once the glaze comes out and finish my review.
